Types of Abortions & Pregnancy Complications

Understanding different types of abortion and pregnancy complications helps individuals recognize symptoms early and seek timely medical care. Below is an educational overview of common clinical terms used in reproductive health:

  • 1. Inevitable Abortion: Occurs when vaginal bleeding and cervical dilation indicate that a miscarriage cannot be stopped. Medical attention is required to prevent complications.
  • 2. Missed Abortion: Happens when the fetus has stopped developing, but the body has not expelled the pregnancy tissue. Often detected during an ultrasound with no fetal heartbeat.
  • 3. Incomplete Abortion: Occurs when some pregnancy tissue remains inside the uterus after a miscarriage or unsuccessful abortion attempt. It may cause heavy bleeding or infection if untreated.
  • 4. IUFD (Intrauterine Fetal Demise): Refers to the loss of a fetus after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Management requires medical evaluation and safe delivery of the fetus.
  • 5. Blighted Ovum: Also known as an anembryonic pregnancy. The sac develops, but the embryo does not. Usually identified early through ultrasound.
  • 6. Hydatidiform Mole (H. Mole): A rare condition where abnormal tissue grows inside the uterus instead of a normal pregnancy. This requires medical treatment and careful follow-up.
  • 7. Threatened Abortion: Involves vaginal bleeding early in pregnancy but with a closed cervix. The pregnancy may still continue successfully. Rest and monitoring are recommended.
  • 8. Ectopic Pregnancy: A dangerous condition where the pregnancy implants outside the uterus, commonly in the fallopian tube. This is a medical emergency and requires urgent treatment.
